Justin Jefferson Has Fewest Catches of Career as Vikings Face Run-Heavy Scheme
The wide receiver has posted his lowest seven-week statistical output since entering the league, a byproduct of Minnesota's defensive focus and new quarterback's rhythm.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has recorded the fewest catches through the first seven weeks of any season in his seven-year career. The star receiver has hauled in 23 passes for 422 yards, a volume that marks a sharp decline from his previous personal bests.
Jefferson's 60.4 receiving yards per game through Week 7 is 32% lower than his next-worst start, which came in 2025 when he averaged 88 yards per game. Across the entire league, 71 NFL players have accumulated more targets than Jefferson's 31 this season.
The reduced volume coincides with Minnesota's 6-0 start, which gives the Vikings the only undefeated record in the NFL. The team is adjusting to the arrival of new quarterback Kyler Murray, and the offense has shifted toward a run-heavy identity to support the league's best defense.
Jefferson acknowledged the mixed nature of playing on an unbeaten team while his individual numbers dip. He missed one full game and parts of another due to a sprained left ankle, factors he cited as mitigating circumstances. He stated that he is not asking the coaching staff for more touches, preferring the current winning trajectory over past seasons where he had high production but lost games.
"I definitely would love winning games over having that production," Jefferson said Wednesday. "There was definitely years before where I had that production and was not winning games. So it's definitely an in-between feeling."
Head coach Kevin O'Connell defended the offensive design, noting that the Vikings have the NFL's fourth-highest rate of designed runs at 43.3% and the second-fewest dropbacks at 198. O'Connell said the team must continue to activate Jefferson despite the lower passing volume, as the strategy of controlling the clock through rushing has been central to their early success.
The Vikings begin their toughest stretch of the schedule this week with a road game against the Detroit Lions. That contest is followed by consecutive matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers.
