President Donald Trump held a photo up for cameras as he marked the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday, November 2. The ceremony took place near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The water feature had been closed for months of renovations that began in preparation for the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations earlier in 2026. The work involved upgrading the pool's surface, plumbing, and surrounding infrastructure as part of an administration effort to improve the National Mall.

The path to reopening involved a dispute over damage to the newly installed blue surface. Shortly after an initial reopening for the July 4 anniversary, portions of the surface began peeling. Trump initially attributed the deterioration to vandalism, but federal prosecutors later dropped charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who had been accused of the damage.

Court documents revealed that the peeling resulted from errors during the renovation process rather than intentional harm. The contractor responsible for the project acknowledged issues with the materials and the installation method. Officials subsequently completed additional repairs to fix the surface before the Monday announcement.

Trump used the event to discuss his administration's record on federal landmark restoration and political priorities. The timing of the appearance, one day before the November 3 midterm elections, drew attention to the political context of the project's completion.

The Reflecting Pool sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial. It has served as a prominent feature of the National Mall for more than a century. Its location near the Washington Monument makes it a common setting for national ceremonies and historic gatherings.
