Jorge Posada no longer feels at home in the Bronx. The 56-year-old former catcher told the New York Post that he has stopped visiting the Yankees because he does not believe the club wants him there. He said he does not feel welcome when he goes to spring training or other team events.

“I mean, I could, but I don’t think they want me there, to tell you the truth,” Posada said. “I don’t feel welcome when I go there, you know? Even in spring training, I don’t feel like. I’m just like, I don’t know, I don’t feel welcome. I don’t feel like they want me there, so I don’t go.”

Posada did not cite a specific incident to explain the distance. He also did not specify if he was seeking a particular job, though he has held various baseball positions since leaving the diamond. His last role mentioned in the context was a front office position with the Miami Marlins when Derek Jeter led that organization.

The catcher spent his entire professional career with New York after the team selected him in the 24th round of the 1990 draft. He played for the Yankees from 1995 through 2011. During those 17 seasons, he recorded 1,664 hits, 275 home runs, 936 walks, and 1,065 runs batted in. He was selected to the All-Star team five times and finished in the top 10 of the American League MVP voting twice.

Posada won four World Series championships with the franchise. In 2015, the Yankees retired his number 20. The team has not won a title since 2009, the final year Posada served as the starting catcher. The Yankees were recently eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series.

The organization currently operates without its former longtime captain on the field or in a publicly announced advisory capacity. Posada’s comments mark a public acknowledgment of the shift in his relationship with the club that defined his playing career.
