Patrick Stewart died at 86 on Wednesday. His family announced the news on Thursday, confirming that the actor passed away at his home in Los Angeles. A spokesperson stated that Stewart had been battling Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia during a brief final period.

Stewart's career spanned six decades, beginning in 1966 when he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. He remained a core member of that company until 1982. During those years, he performed in major productions such as Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, and Henry IV. The company described him as a colossus of stage and screen and one of the finest classical Shakespearean actors of his generation.

His transition to international fame came through television and film. He starred in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later appeared in Star Trek: Picard. He also played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, a role that debuted in 2000. Stewart is scheduled to appear as Xavier in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, which releases on December 18.

Colleagues across the industry issued tributes on social media. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared a statement recalling his first experience working with Stewart on the initial X-Men film. Feige described the actor as brilliant, charming, and warm, noting that Stewart possessed a quiet strength and gravitas that exceeded his on-screen persona. Feige added that Stewart was even more remarkable offscreen, possessing a wonderfully sharp sense of humor.

Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment posted a joint tribute on Instagram. They praised Stewart for bringing grace, intelligence, and humanity to the character of Xavier. The statement noted that his legacy extends to the many people he mentored. The company expressed deep sadness over his passing and extended condolences to his wife Sunny, his children, and his friends.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are set to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, honored Stewart in an Instagram post. They described him as a legendary actor with an unmistakable presence and unmatched integrity. The brothers thanked Stewart for entertaining audiences and teaching them humanity both on and off the screen.

Tributes also came from long-time collaborators. Wil Wheaton, who starred with Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation, shared a photo with the caption Godspeed, Captain. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker, posted a photo of Stewart with the message Rest in peace my friend. Terry Matalas, who served as showrunner for the final season of Star Trek: Picard, shared a smiling photo of Stewart and wrote, Oh Captain, my Captain. This is how I'll always remember you.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, remembered Stewart as a friend and a magnificent actor. Shatner noted that Stewart brought intelligence and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. The two actors met in the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations. Shatner added that his heart goes out to Stewart's family and that the actor will be deeply missed.

Hugh Jackman, a longtime friend and co-star in the X-Men films, posted photos of the two together. Jackman wrote that they lost one of the greats of stage and screen. He stated that he learned much from Stewart and would miss him all of his days. Other tributes included posts from Seth MacFarlane, George Takei, and Josh Gad, all praising Stewart's versatility and voice.

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original series, posted on Bluesky. He stated that fans around the world mourn the passing of an irreplaceable legend. Takei noted that Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before and inspired a new generation of star-gazers. The Royal Shakespeare Company confirmed Stewart's tenure with the group, marking his departure from their honorary ranks.
