Laura and Joe Kosky lost everything inside their home when a fire consumed their property in Hughesville, Maryland, on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The incident occurred just eight days before Halloween, leaving the couple with no belongings and facing the immediate task of rebuilding their lives from scratch. A GoFundMe page launched in their name describes the situation as a real-life nightmare for the pair who previously spent years assisting others in the community.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m. on the 16000 block of Rivers Reach Lane. Volunteer firefighters from Hughesville, Dentsville, La Plata, Waldorf, and neighboring jurisdictions responded to the call. Upon arrival, crews found an active fire burning in the basement of the two-story brick home. Thick clouds of smoke billowed from the structure as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The front lawn was covered in Halloween decorations, including fake tombstones, which remained in the grass while crews positioned ladders against the house.
The fire crews managed to stop the flames from spreading to the upper floors of the residence. However, smoke filled the entire home during the operation. Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department officials stated that their crews operated at the scene for approximately two hours. During the response, one Calvert County firefighter was transported from the scene for a medical evaluation after exiting the burning building. The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire to determine what sparked the blaze.
The damage to the Kosky home extended well beyond the basement level. Paige Miller, who organized the fundraising campaign to support the couple, stated that the fire left them with nothing inside their home. Miller noted that Laura has long been known for looking out for others, making the sudden change in their circumstances particularly difficult. The fundraiser aims to help the couple replace essential belongings, secure housing, and begin the process of recovery.
Miller described Laura as a person with a large heart who consistently went above and beyond to help those around her. She characterized Laura as a second mother to many in the community. Miller said it is now time for the people Laura has helped over the years to return that kindness. The community has rallied to support the couple during this difficult period, with friends and neighbors offering assistance to help them get back on their feet.
The loss has also affected members of the local entertainment industry. DJ Dave Karaoke & Entertainment shared an emotional tribute to the couple on social media. The business explained that their relationship with the Koskys began when Laura and Joe were clients. Over time, that professional relationship developed into a lasting friendship. The company now considers the couple part of its extended family. They recalled the couple’s positive attitudes and infectious smiles, noting that the Koskys helped others achieve their dreams.
