About 55 residents at the Purcellville East Apartments in Loudoun County, Virginia, were ordered to leave their homes on Thursday, Oct. 29, after inspectors found dangerous conditions in the buildings.
The evacuation order applies to 22 occupied apartments and two additional units. Residents living on the ground floors were allowed to remain in their homes.
The issue began on Sunday, Oct. 25, when Loudoun County Fire and Rescue crews responded to a service call at the property on North 16th Street. Firefighters noticed damage to the staircases during their visit. They reported the findings to county building inspectors, who determined that the stairwells leading to the second floors of six buildings were unsafe.
Local agencies and nonprofit organizations are assisting displaced residents and their pets in securing temporary housing. Firefighters are also helping residents collect personal belongings from apartments they can no longer safely access.
County officials have not announced a timeline for when residents can return to the apartments. They have also not identified the cause of the staircase damage or the duration of the problem before firefighters discovered it. Residents seeking assistance can call Loudoun County at 703-777-0420.
