Walter Koenig, the actor who portrayed Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek television series, has died. He was 90. His representative, talent agent Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the news on Monday.

Koenig died at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was one of the last remaining members of the original cast. His death leaves only two surviving marquee leads from the show that aired in the late 1960s.

The other two surviving leads are William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, and George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu. Shatner is 95 years old. Takei is 89. They are the only two original leads still alive following the deaths of Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Nichelle Nichols.

Takei, who was the best man at Koenig's wedding, offered a tribute on Instagram. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades," Takei said. He noted that Koenig's birthday, September 14, 1936, matched the anniversary of Takei's own wedding in 2008.

"I will always treasure that he and I shared that date," Takei wrote. "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend." McGinnis described Koenig as an actor whose talent and warmth left a lasting mark on fans worldwide.

Koenig first joined the Star Trek cast in 1967 for the second season. The character of Chekov was introduced to represent a new nationality on the Enterprise. Koenig reprised the role in seven feature films, starting with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. He continued appearing in sequels through Star Trek Generations in 1994.

Before Star Trek, Koenig began his television career in the early 1960s with roles in shows like General Hospital and I Spy. He later had a recurring role on the sci-fi series Babylon 5 in the 1990s. He remained active in the Star Trek franchise, doing voice work for video games and appearing in a cameo on Star Trek: Picard in 2023.

Koenig continued to work until recently. He won the best actor award at this year's Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in the short film Mr. Fleischmann. McGinnis said Koenig enjoyed interacting with fans at conventions and understanding the importance of the franchise to the community.
