Abdul El-Sayed faces renewed scrutiny from within the Democratic Party in Michigan as Election Day approaches next week. The controversy reignited on Wednesday when Jason Turkish, the fiance of former primary opponent Rep. Haley Stevens, told The Detroit News he intends to support Republican candidate Mike Rogers. Turkish stated that El-Sayed has not done enough to address concerns shared by many in Michigan's large Jewish community.

Stevens responded to the comments a few hours later on CNN, where she confirmed she would still vote for El-Sayed. She urged the campaign to "shut out the hate and call it out" so that voters in her coalition feel comfortable returning to the polls. Stevens drew heavy support from Jewish and Black voters during the primary, a demographic that has been central to the recent criticism.

The current friction centers on an advertisement by Rebellion PAC, an independent left-wing group. The ad linked United States support for Israel to high grocery prices. El-Sayed told reporters the spot "has nothing to do with our campaign" and that it is not the topic he wants to discuss during the final stretch. Stevens and other party members argued he should have more strongly denounced the ad's content rather than just distancing himself from it.

El-Sayed has attempted to broaden his base by targeting college students and rural residents, including stops in the heavily Republican Upper Peninsula. His team released a commercial featuring clips of conservative figures praising him, such as former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson has faced accusations of antisemitism, which he has denied, but the inclusion of his image has caused additional friction with Jewish voters.

Rabbi Aaron Starr of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield criticized both the Rebellion PAC ad and the El-Sayed campaign spot during a call with reporters. "We are one week away from the election, and it feels like the temperature has turned way up," Starr said. He noted that conditions have worsened over the last seven weeks instead of improving.

Republican nominee Mike Rogers faces his own headwinds from voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump, the Iran war, and rising costs. Rogers remained closely aligned with the president on Sunday, appearing alongside him at a Michigan rally where he credited Trump with bringing manufacturing jobs to the state. The race now hinges on whether Trump-related anger will overcome the visible divisions within the Democratic base.
