SLR Food Distribution Inc. is voluntarily pulling Wise Wife brand ground cinnamon from shelves after laboratory tests detected elevated lead levels. The company, based in Hicksville, Long Island, announced the action on the FDA website.

Testing at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station identified the contamination. No illnesses had been reported as of Thursday, Oct. 29, when the recall was issued. The product is sold in a 3.88-ounce clear plastic container with a black screw-top cap. Shoppers should look for a best-before date of 4/25/2027 and the UPC code 0688474302754.

The cinnamon was distributed to retail and grocery stores in 14 states: Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. SLR Food Distribution is notifying customers to stop selling the item, remove it from displays, and hold remaining inventory.

Consumers should discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The announcement noted that short-term exposure to very low lead levels may cause no symptoms. Higher levels or longer exposure can lead to increased blood lead levels. Children face particular risks, as prolonged exposure over weeks or months can cause permanent central nervous system damage, including learning disorders and developmental problems.

The health effects depend on the amount of lead, the duration of exposure, and the person's age and body weight. SLR Food Distribution is handling consumer questions at 516-437-3782 or via email. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
