HACKENSACK, N.J. Martha Stewart issued a public apology on Instagram this week regarding her Halloween costume. She admitted that her initial response to the backlash was insufficient. The 85-year-old said she had really messed up.
Stewart posted the image on Saturday, October 31. The photo showed her wearing tattered clothing and makeup designed to look like dirt. She held a sign asking for food and help. The image was part of an Instagram carousel promoting her QVC candles. She deleted the post after the criticism began.
In her first reaction, Stewart defended the outfit as a way to raise awareness about homelessness. She stated she did not intend to offend anyone. She described homelessness as an issue she cared deeply about, according to E! News. Her later apology shifted that tone. She acknowledged that the costume was insensitive and not funny. She noted that many people are suffering economically.
Stewart wrote, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” on Instagram. “My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
The designer has long ties to the New York metropolitan area. She currently lives in Katonah, a hamlet in northern Westchester County. She previously resided in East Hampton on Long Island. She also lived in Turkey Hill in Westport, Connecticut.
