Bergen County residents have a short window this week to view the moon, Jupiter, and Mars together in the pre-dawn sky. The three objects will remain visible simultaneously from Sunday, November 1, through Tuesday, November 3, before they move farther apart in their orbits. Viewers do not need a telescope to see the display. The naked eye is sufficient to spot all three bodies against the darkening sky.

The celestial trio will rise late at night and cross the sky toward the east-southeast. Observers should look for the moon first, as it serves as a bright guide to locating the planets. Jupiter shines brightly and is easy to identify. Mars appears as a smaller point of light with a distinct orange glow. The moon’s position relative to the planets will shift each morning due to its changing rise time.

On Sunday morning, the moon will appear highest in the sky. By Monday, it will move closer to Mars. On Tuesday, the moon will sit lower in the sky, positioning itself below Jupiter. This movement creates the appearance of the moon dancing among the planets over the three-day period. The alignment offers a clear view of the planets for anyone awake before sunrise.

The weather forecast for the region looks fairly clear and dry during this time. Temperatures will drop significantly, making cold conditions a factor for outdoor viewing. Sunday morning is expected to be the coldest of the three days. Residents planning to step outside should wear warm coats to stay comfortable while looking up at the sky.
