Olandria Carthen paid tribute to supermodel Naomi Campbell by recreating a 1990 fashion editorial for Halloween. Carthen posted an eight slide carousel on Instagram on October 29, 2026, featuring black and white images that directly mirror Campbell’s work for American Vogue. The star captioned the set, “Inspired by an icon, Campbell x Carthen,” while playing Teena Marie’s “Square Biz.”
The costume references the “Seeing Spots” shoot, photographed by Peter Lindbergh in Los Angeles for American Vogue in 1990. Grace Coddington styled Campbell for that story. In the original images, Campbell sat in a convertible with a Dalmatian and later walked a pack of the dogs while wearing a belted polka dot trench coat.
Carthen’s recreation included a long sleeve spotted top and matching gloves. She wore stacked black bangles and styled her hair in a voluminous retro bob with sweeping bangs. Her makeup featured prominent lashes and a glossy lip. In one photo, she sat behind the wheel of a convertible with a Dalmatian at her side. In another, she posed in a black and white polka dot trench coat with two Dalmatians.
Carthen’s stylists, Matthew and Reginald Reisman, have cited 1990s Naomi Campbell as a primary inspiration for her personal style since she began working with them. The “Love Island USA” star has increased her public presence since leaving the show, attending red carpet events and giving interviews.
Naomi Campbell holds a historic place in fashion magazine history. She appeared on the cover of British Vogue in December 1987, becoming the first Black cover girl for that publication since 1966. In August 1988, she became the first Black model on the cover of French Vogue. Reports indicate Yves Saint Laurent threatened to pull his advertisements if she did not appear on the cover. Anna Wintour then placed Campbell on the September 1989 cover of American Vogue, making her the first Black model to front the magazine’s biggest issue of the year.
The timing of Carthen’s post coincides with the recent release of “Vogue Portraits: A Century of Icons and Idols,” a two volume book featuring the magazine’s defining images. Chloe Malle, head of editorial content for Vogue, discussed the collection on the TODAY show this week.
Fans responded enthusiastically to Carthen’s Instagram post. Rapper Monaleo commented, “eattttt.” One user wrote, “I AM OBSESSED!!! ARE YOU KIDDING?!” Another added, “EVERYBODY SHUT UP, OLAWEEN IS HERE!!!!!!!” A final commenter noted, “Olandria, you weren’t inspired by an icon. You ARE becoming one.”
