Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks in most of the United States turn back from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m., the National Institute of Standards and Technology said. Both sunrise and sunset will move an hour earlier by the clock. Morning light will arrive sooner, while afternoon daylight for errands, outdoor activities and the commute home gets shorter.

AccuWeather reported that New York City, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle will all record sunset before 5 p.m. Sunday. AccuWeather expert meteorologist Tyler Roys said the shift can catch people off guard. "The time change can really catch people off guard, especially when they're leaving work or picking up their kids and suddenly find themselves doing those activities after sunset," Roys said. "While we aren't actually losing an hour of daylight when the clocks change, shifting that daylight to the morning can make evenings feel much shorter."

The change lands differently by latitude. AccuWeather puts Sunday's sunset in Caribou, Maine at 4:16 p.m. Houston reaches sunset at 5:34 p.m., and Miami at 5:39 p.m. The reset is separate from the seasonal shortening of days already underway. AccuWeather said Seattle will shed more than 70 minutes of daylight in November, compared with about 30 minutes in many Gulf Coast communities.

Daylight keeps shrinking toward the winter solstice on Monday, Dec. 21. The earliest sunset typically arrives before that date, usually in early December in many locations.

Manual clocks should be turned back one hour before bed on Saturday, Oct. 31. Appliance and vehicle clocks need attention too, along with automatic time settings on phones and computers. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time, while the Navajo Nation does, according to NIST.
