San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has secured a trade for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts.

The 49ers sent a 2027 fourth-round pick to Indianapolis to reacquire the player they originally drafted with the seventh overall pick in 2016. The deal was announced Tuesday, marking the first major roster move by the 6-1 team before the November 10 deadline.

Lynch stated in March 2020 that trading Buckner was the toughest decision of his tenure. Since then, the team has struggled to replace his production, utilizing draft capital on Javon Kinlaw, signing Javon Hargrave, and adding Maliek Collins. Buckner had expressed frustration with his situation in Indianapolis in an October 18 social media post, which prompted 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk to comment "Come home."

The move addresses immediate defensive needs following a loss in Atlanta where the team recorded zero sacks. The 49ers currently rank 31st in the NFL in pressure rate when rushing four players. Buckner has missed only 14 games in his first 10 seasons, providing a reliable presence on the defensive line.

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the staff is using the bye week to evaluate further moves, with a specific focus on the defensive line and receiver corps. The team faces injuries to edge rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle C.J. West, wide receivers Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson, and wideout Deebo Samuel Sr. Shanahan noted that while some players may return for Week 9 against the Raiders, the team must plan for their absence.

Veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams, who is 38 years old, expressed support for aggressive moves to win a championship. He stated that players value proven talent over draft picks, which they view as a gamble. "For us [players], you always want the proven product," Williams said. "I don't look at it the same way they look at it. They look at it in a whole picture view."

Potential targets for additional trades include edge rushers Khalil Mack, Will McDonald IV, Josh Sweat, and Yaya Diaby. On the offensive side, the team could look at wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr., Jerry Jeudy, and Josh Downs, who requested a trade from the Colts on Wednesday. Shanahan indicated that the team might acquire players to serve as insurance while injured starters recover.

The 49ers previously made impactful trades for Trent Williams in 2020 and Christian McCaffrey in 2022. Lynch aims to find a long-term foundation piece if the team pursues a larger deal. Tight end George Kittle, who has frequently asked Lynch about potential targets, celebrated Buckner's return on social media on October 27.

Shanahan acknowledged that the team has a chance to improve its roster but is not guaranteed to get all injured players back for the remainder of the season. The front office will monitor the availability of players like Raiders end Maxx Crosby and Jets wideout Garrett Wilson, though such moves would likely require multiple top picks.
