Bodum USA recalled about 5.9 million french press coffee makers Thursday after the Consumer Product Safety Commission reviewed reports of glass carafes breaking during use. The agency said 48 burn injuries have been reported alongside 70 incidents of cracking or shattering carafes.
The recall covers eight-cup and 12-cup Bodum models with replaceable glass carafes: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya. Bodum said glass can break when a carafe is cracked or damaged, including when stirred with a metal spoon.
Bodum stated it takes injury reports "extremely seriously" and that the recall "is an opportunity to reinforce warnings against using a cracked or damaged carafe and in particular, against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe." The company added that the "rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low."
The units sold for $15 to $65 at coffee and home goods stores nationwide and through Amazon, Target, and Walmart, from 1974 through October 2026. Customers are told to stop using metal spoons inside the carafes, discard cracked carafes, and request a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label. Details are at Bodum's recall website or by calling 888-879-8213.
The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models, and company warnings are engraved on the glass carafes.
