Rebecca Bennett stood before a crowd of 60 in Sparta on Sunday morning and pointed out that Tom Kean Jr. has not held a single public event since taking office. The gathering took place in a local ambulance squad building as part of Bennett's Deckplate Leadership Tours around Congressional District 7.

Kean has avoided unplanned interactions with the public throughout his time in office. His formal events are rarely announced, and when reporters learn of them and arrive, they are often denied entry. This approach contrasts with a previous comment from Kean, who stated he engages with the media more than most officials do.

The race hinges on whether this inaccessibility will hurt the incumbent in the November 3 election. Kean used a similar strategy two years ago when he won reelection over Sue Altman. Many Republican supporters, including RNC Committeeman Bill Palatucci, have argued that the issue only matters to reporters, not to average voters who are unlikely to attend such events anyway.

The district contains approximately 16,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats. However, early voting data shows Democrats leading in this cycle, a year that appears unfavorable for Republicans. Bennett and her team are using public appearances to counter Kean's closed-door approach and build visibility in the remaining weeks before the election.

Kean’s campaign has run television commercials portraying Bennett, a healthcare executive, as a greedy millionaire who harms patients. On Sunday, Bennett responded to the ads with a joke, saying the next accusation would be that she eats puppies and cancels Christmas. She noted that she owns a rescue dog but said the commercials signal that Kean is trying to drag her into the mud because he lacks positive accomplishments.

The contrast between the two candidates’ public strategies has become a central theme in the race. While Kean relies on his existing partisan base, Bennett is actively scanning crowds and engaging with residents in local venues. The next major test will be whether the 16,000-vote Republican registration advantage can overcome the current Democratic lead in early ballots.
