Zack Mullock opened his campaign appearance in Vineland by quoting his mother's advice: do not talk about men's asses. The Democratic nominee for Congress delivered the line to a crowd gathered on Landis Avenue in the center of Congressional District 2 on Monday.
Mullock used the joke to mock President Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric. The Cape May mayor told the audience it was time to move past the president's comments. He pledged to end the war in Iran and repeal tariffs if elected. Mullock identified empowering labor as the harder legislative fight ahead.
The event aimed to defeat Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew in Tuesday's election. After making his introduction, Mullock welcomed Governor Mikie Sherrill to the stage. The crowd cheered as Sherrill approached the platform from the drive outside the Democratic headquarters.
Sherrill, a retired Navy helicopter pilot, compared her political strategy to a high-speed aircraft landing. She noted that voters in parts of New Jersey often ask if she is Rebecca Bennett. She clarified that she is the other helicopter pilot.
Recalling a race she ran with a Marine jet pilot, Sherrill said her opponent told her to stay on the glide path. She stated that helicopter pilots do not use glide paths. Instead, they bring the craft in hot and slam it down.
Sherrill emphasized her goal to maintain the momentum from last year, when she narrowly lost the district. She told the crowd that the Democrats are charting a path forward for working people. She pledged to hold Trump accountable, flip the House, and flip the Senate.
Sherrill concluded her remarks by predicting new leadership in the White House in 2028. The outdoor audience responded with loud applause to the final statement.
