President Donald Trump said the United States could reach an agreement with Canada soon to end a trade dispute that has strained relations between the two countries. Speaking Sunday at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, Trump said he expects Canadian officials to make concessions after months of tariffs and disagreements over trade policy.

"We'll have that settled pretty soon. They're willing to give us anything at this moment," Trump told supporters at the rally. He repeated his position that Canada has benefited unfairly from its trading relationship with the United States, and said tariffs are needed to secure more favorable arrangements for American businesses and workers. The Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 50% on numerous Canadian products in August, and Ottawa responded with retaliatory measures.

The dispute has affected businesses along the northern border, particularly manufacturers and automotive companies that rely on trade between the two countries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded by pursuing closer cooperation with European partners, an effort his government says is meant to reduce Canada's dependence on American trade. Formal negotiations between Washington and Ottawa have remained difficult, and Canadian officials have not publicly confirmed Trump's suggestion that an agreement is imminent.

Trump's comments come ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with Michigan among the states where trade and manufacturing policy are receiving attention. Neither government has announced a finalized deal or a timetable for resolving the remaining disputes.

No agreement has been announced by either government.
