Quenton Nelson is set to make his Seattle debut on Monday night.
The three-time All-Pro guard arrived in Renton, Washington, on Tuesday after trading eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. The Seahawks acquired Nelson in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick. General Manager John Schneider has made at least one midseason trade in each of the past four years. This latest deal follows the acquisitions of Leonard Williams in 2023, Ernest Jones IV in 2024, and Rashid Shaheed in 2025.
Head Coach Mike Macdonald stated the team is eager to add Nelson to the roster. He noted that Nelson will play his traditional left guard position. Grey Zabel will move to right guard. Anthony Bradford, who returned from injury last week, will step back into a backup role. Macdonald said the offensive line played its best game of the season Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The team rushed for 153 yards in that 20-3 win. Macdonald called Nelson a surefire Hall of Fame candidate with a decisive and relentless style.
Nelson described the transition as bittersweet but exciting. He praised the community in Indianapolis and the welcoming nature of the Seattle staff. He noted that the equipment staff and trainers have been helpful during his short stay. Nelson said the offense is a completely different system from what he knows. He highlighted the heavy use of a fullback in Seattle's playbook. He is learning new protections and terminology quickly to be ready for the Bears game.
Center Jalen Sundell worked with Nelson late into the night on Wednesday to help him learn the system. Nelson also received guidance from running backs John Benton and Quinshon Odom. He acknowledged the whirlwind nature of joining a team mid-season. He said the players in the offensive line room understand the situation and are helping him mesh with the group.
The Seahawks face a shuffling offensive line this week. Charles Cross is likely out with an ankle sprain. Josh Jones will start at tackle in his place. Combined with the moves at guard, three new players will be on the line compared to last week. Macdonald said the team expects the chemistry to settle quickly. He believes the addition of Nelson makes the Seahawks a better unit.
Bradford returned from a month on injured reserve to help bolster the offense. Macdonald said the team loves Bradford and recognizes his hard work. He acknowledged that the situation is not easy for the players who have earned their roles. Macdonald said Bradford will stay ready and that the team is a play away from returning to the previous lineup. The players support Bradford, and Macdonald said they are behind him as well.
