The Liberian-flagged container ship Contship Jet sank in the Black Sea on Thursday after sustaining damage from three maritime drones. Bulgarian authorities confirmed the vessel went down approximately 21 nautical miles from the coast. The incident occurred on Wednesday, marking the fifth drone attack in the country's exclusive economic zone this month.
The ship was traveling from Haifa, Israel, to Constanța, Romania. All 18 crew members, consisting of 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians, were rescued by Bulgarian naval and border police vessels. The crew was transported to the port city of Varna for medical evaluation. No fatalities were reported.
Maritime officials noted that the cargo included lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, and various gases. Navy teams collected water samples in Bulgarian territorial waters and reported no signs of pollution following the sinking. The Greek-managed vessel had been operating under standard commercial routes before the strike.
The attack coincided with a security meeting in Sofia involving defense ministers from Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. The three NATO members issued a joint statement condemning the strikes on commercial vessels. They called for an immediate cessation of attacks that threaten maritime infrastructure and the safety of shipping lanes.
The ministers agreed to improve intelligence sharing and early warning capabilities in the Black Sea region. This coordination aims to address the rising frequency of incidents targeting merchant traffic. The alliance seeks to protect vital supply lines through the area.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev told Parliament earlier this month that the logic of the attacks points toward Russia, though proof remains elusive. Russia has not officially claimed responsibility for the recent strikes. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated on Oct. 15 that the alliance strengthened its eastern flank posture, including increased counter-drone capabilities, in response to the growing threat.
Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov identified the attackers as maritime drones. The sinking of the Contship Jet adds to a series of incidents off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. These events have prompted questions among alliance members about the strategic intent behind the targeting of commercial shipping.
