Irish runner Ciara Mageean died on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the age of 34, her family announced on Instagram. The family stated that Mageean, who had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025, lost her battle at 6:30 a.m. surrounded by loved ones. Her death occurred in Belfast, less than three weeks after she married her partner, Thomas Moran.

Mageean was a two-time Olympian who represented Ireland in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021. Her most recent major victory came in 2024 when she won the European championship in the 1,500 meters in Rome. That gold medal followed a bronze in Amsterdam in 2016 and a silver in Munich in 2022.

She also competed for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, earning a silver medal in the 1,500 meters in Birmingham in 2022. An Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics. In 2023, Mageean finished fourth in the 1,500 meters at the world championships and was named Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year by the BBC.

Born in Portaferry, County Down, Mageean began her athletic career playing camogie at Portaferry Gaelic Athletic Club. She later became a national record-setting runner in Ireland. Tributes for Mageean were issued by the Olympic Federation of Ireland, which honored her passion for sport. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill, and World Athletics also paid tribute to the athlete.

The family described her as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend, and inspiration. They noted that she will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
