Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin visited Millville on Oct. 31 to campaign with Zack Mullock, who is seeking the 2nd Congressional District seat held by U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew.

Martin appeared at the home of Rachel Green, described in party accounts as a longtime Democratic supporter, on the evening before Halloween. Mullock supporters gathered to pick up campaign literature for door-to-door distribution in the district ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Mullock, who serves as mayor of Cape May, spoke about Van Drew's legislative record upon entering the room. "My opponent has passed two laws in office," Mullock said. "You know what the first one was? Renaming a post office. You know what the second one was? Renaming a post office."

Mullock pointed to the district's history of electing members of both parties as evidence that bipartisan work has occurred there in the past. He cited former Representatives Bill Hughes, a Democrat, and Frank LoBiondo, a Republican, as examples. "You know when a piece of legislation gets passed, you get a pen from the president," Mullock said. "Those gentlemen had many pens from the president because they got bipartisan work done. That is not happening right now. We need bipartisanship to get accomplished good laws."

Martin, speaking to the room, described values he said once bridged political divisions. "Despite policy differences, there were things that united us, like respect for the Constitution and respect for due process and the rule of law," Martin said. "Respect for an independent judiciary and free press and the abiding belief that we would stand with our allies around the world. Just a few values that united us. Now we have one guy in the White House ripping up the Constitution and trampling on the rights people died for."

Van Drew, a Republican who represents the 2nd District, is seeking re-election on Nov. 3.
