Residents of Bergen County can expect a change in the musical lineup for next year's Super Bowl. Jay-Z will headline the halftime show on Feb. 14. The performance will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation made the announcement on Monday night.
This marks a shift for the hip-hop artist, who has previously served behind the scenes. Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL since 2019. The company advises on and helps produce the league's entertainment presentations. Jay-Z has played a key role in these productions for several years. Now, he is stepping into the spotlight as the featured performer.
The announcement comes after days of speculation. Jay-Z recently concluded his “Jay-Z 30” concert tour. The tour began with three shows at Yankee Stadium in New York. It continued in London and ended over the weekend in Southern California. He closed the tour at the same stadium where he will now perform for the Super Bowl.
In 2019, Jay-Z told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that he was not interested in performing. “If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now,” he said at the time. Seven years later, he has agreed to take the stage.
Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, has won 25 Grammy Awards. He has received 89 nominations in total. That total places him second in history behind his wife, Beyoncé. Beyoncé has performed at two Super Bowls. His catalog includes albums such as “Reasonable Doubt,” “The Blueprint,” and “The Black Album.”
His discography features hit songs like “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” “99 Problems,” and “Empire State of Mind.” He collaborated with Alicia Keys on the latter. His 1996 debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year. He also co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and founded Roc Nation in 2008.
Jay-Z became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017. He joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. His career extends into music publishing, artist management, and sports. Bad Bunny performed at last season's Super Bowl in February. His songs saw sharp gains in streaming charts and playlists in the hours following that show.
