Bloomington police detained a man carrying a firearm early Sunday morning after a shooting injured at least seven people near Indiana University. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, leaving no reported deaths but seven confirmed victims ranging in age from 17 to 27.
Deputy Police Chief Ryan Pedigo stated that officers heard multiple gunshots while monitoring a large crowd near Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street. Preliminary information suggests a disturbance in the crowd preceded the gunfire. The shooting took place in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, between Grant and Dunn streets, approximately two blocks west of the university campus.
The seven confirmed victims include four males and three females. Ambulances transported all seven individuals to area hospitals, where investigators were determining the extent of their injuries. Police noted that the number of people who fired weapons remained unclear as they examined the scene.
Officers spotted a man with a firearm running northeast from the scene and pursued him. They took him into custody east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow and located a gun nearby. Pedigo said police had not yet determined if the detained man was responsible for any of the shots.
Investigators recovered numerous shell casings of different calibers from the sidewalk near 420 E. Kirkwood Ave. Detectives are also checking for additional injured individuals who may not have reported their injuries immediately.
The shooting happened hours after Indiana University's homecoming football game. The No. 4-ranked Indiana Hoosiers, the defending NCAA champions, defeated Minnesota 23-16 in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 31. Authorities had not established a connection between the game and the Sunday disturbance.
Bloomington Police Detective Chris Scott is asking for information or video footage from anyone who witnessed the event. Residents can contact him at 812-339-4477 or via email to assist with the ongoing investigation.
