Formula One returned to Texas this weekend, bringing the annual United States Grand Prix back to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The event marks a shift from the track's early struggles to its current status as a primary destination for dedicated racing fans.
COTA differs from the temporary street circuits used in Miami and Las Vegas. It is a permanent facility designed by motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz. Herman Tilke’s company handled the buildings and infrastructure, but Schwanz created the layout. The course features a mix of corner speeds, heavy braking zones, and elevation changes. It also offers wide run-off areas rather than concrete barriers.
The venue has changed significantly since the first race in 2012. Hospitality structures now cover the grassy banks that surround the track. One building connects to the paddock via a cable car. This complex includes two swimming pools. The area also hosts World Endurance Championship and IMSA events in September.
Amusement rides and roller coasters now appear along the track’s fringes. These additions are part of COTA’s strategy to operate as a theme park, concert venue, and racing facility. The diversification aims to attract visitors beyond the single day of racing.
The race is scheduled for this weekend. It is one of three Formula One events held in the United States. Fans generally prefer COTA over the other two venues.
