Little Falls officials issued a health alert on Monday after a local fox tested positive for rabies. The warning extends to residents of both Little Falls and Clifton who may have encountered the animal during the past week.
The New Jersey Department of Health confirmed the positive result on Oct. 26. Animal control took custody of the fox on Oct. 22 following an initial report on Oct. 21. The animal was first seen near the Tulip Garden apartment complex. Residents also reported sightings along Turnberry Road, East Main Street, Alida Street, Sindle Avenue, and Montclair Avenue near Pompton Avenue.
Officials have identified active fox dens near the Peckman River. They urged residents to keep children and small pets supervised while outdoors. Dogs must be kept securely leashed in the affected areas.
The Clifton Health Department asked anyone who believes they or their pet had contact with the fox to call 973-470-5760 immediately. Health officials also advised residents to avoid handling unfamiliar animals. Pet owners should ensure their animals have current rabies vaccinations.
Anyone bitten by an animal or exposed to its saliva should seek medical attention right away. Residents are instructed to report sick or suspicious animals to animal control rather than attempting to capture them themselves.
