New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a statement for Oct. 7 marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel but did not refer to the killings of about 1,200 people that day. In a piece dated Oct. 22, 2026, Jewish Link of NJ said the mayor's message called the date a painful day for many New Yorkers, then turned to accusations of genocide and apartheid against Israel and to living conditions in Gaza.

The publication wrote that Hamas used methods intended to maximize suffering and distributed live video of the attacks to supporters in Gaza, the West Bank and other countries. It contrasted that approach with Nazi efforts to hide their crimes against Jews.

At Union Square on Oct. 7, hundreds of Hamas supporters interrupted a Jewish peace activists' ceremony with jeers and noisemakers, according to Jewish Link of NJ. The publication wrote that the disruption showed how Mamdani is remaking New York City into a place where Jews cannot move freely.

Jewish Link of NJ described Mamdani's record as a student activist and as mayor, stating he seeks to isolate Jews in the United States while turning Israel into a pariah state. It listed Sen. Bernie Sanders among his allies and said college students receive instruction in anti-Israel and antisemitic claims at schools funded by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Arab and Muslim partners, and that NPR and the BBC circulate the same claims.

The publication identified three claims it said power antisemitism: that Israel stole the land, that Israel is an apartheid regime, and that Israel committed genocide in Gaza. It wrote that these allegations let Mamdani win support from both antisemites and others, and that he and his Hamas and Iranian supporters seek to eliminate Israel first and then the United States.

Mamdani's statement on the anniversary did not address the attacks' methods or the number of people killed. Jewish Link of NJ called on Jews and non-Jews to oppose Mamdani and his allies.
