Rebecca Bennett held her final election eve rally on Monday evening at the Chisholm Community Center in Springfield. The event brought together New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, and roughly 150 local supporters.
Sherrill addressed reporters outside the gymnasium before the crowd entered. She predicted that Republican candidates would face a heavy defeat across the country on Tuesday. Inside, she told the audience that the nation was watching New Jersey closely. She noted that Congressional District 7 is one of the most competitive races currently on the ballot.
Senator Andy Kim, who represented the district from 2018 to 2024, outlined key issues facing voters. He cited corruption, an unpopular war, and a weak economy as primary concerns. Kim told the crowd that voters would be sending a message of satisfaction with the current administration on Tuesday.
Senator Cory Booker took the stage next to offer a historical perspective. He referenced Thomas Paine’s writings on summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. He argued that New Jersey’s role in the American Revolution demonstrates a state’s commitment to its ideals. He suggested that this history supports the Democratic bid for the seat.
Bennett spoke last, using the platform to emphasize her background. For the first time during the campaign season, she displayed the flag patch from her Navy uniform. She connected her military service to her desire to serve the country. She then directed her remarks toward her opponent, Republican candidate Tom Kean Jr.
Bennett described Kean as complicit and a coward. She stated that voters would be firing him from his position on Tuesday. Kean has not held public events recently. His social media accounts show he appeared on the Scott Jennings radio show and rallied supporters in Hunterdon County and Mount Olive over the weekend.
Kean is reported to be holding an election night event between 8 and 10 p.m. Tuesday. The window suggests an early end to the evening if the results are not immediate.
