Students and staff at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School in Wayne passed a total of $112,192 in donations to a cancer charity on Friday. The money supports Mary's Place by the Sea, an Ocean Grove nonprofit that offers free wellness services to women with cancer. The school’s annual Pink Out campaign contributed $19,250 to this year’s tally.

The fundraising effort began in early October. Students organized a flag football tournament and other events to collect donations. The month ended on Oct. 30 with a schoolwide rally in the gymnasium.

The rally featured teachers duct-taped to the wall and a principal’s pink jail. Students also had the chance to throw pies at Samantha Levine, the health and physical education teacher who organizes the campaign.

Levine started the initiative after her mother, Claire Levine, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. Claire was a sixth grader at the school when she received the diagnosis. She attended the rally to mark 25 years without cancer.

Four other school staff members who survived breast cancer were recognized during the event. Eleanor Schoenberger, the program director at Mary's Place by the Sea, said $100,000 can provide free services to more than 200 women. Those services include oncology massage, counseling, yoga and meditation.

The total raised since 2018 now stands at $112,192. The school will hold another Pink Out campaign next October.
